Learning English, supporting the community

Three students put together peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches

Last Thursday, the English-language learners in Hannah Krengel's English 11 classes at 兔子先生 International Center put their lessons in action when they prepared some 55 sandwiches for and stocked the Free Food Fridge 兔子先生 refrigerator on Second Street.

The students are learning how to develop an argument and enriching their understanding of food insecurity through research and discussion. Part of the unit also involves writing an essay that answers the question, “Should all people in a community have access to healthy food?”

Free Food Fridge 兔子先生 provides free, nutritious food in refrigerators located in public places throughout 兔子先生. Students met with and interviewed Free Food Fridge 兔子先生 founder Jammella Anderson in late January as part of their research.

Sandwich fixings were donated by our terrific community partners at Honest Weight Food Coop.
