The second graders in Stacy Deming’s class at Delaware Community School know all about Zen, and on Tuesday morning they talked about their feelings and practiced breathing exercises.
It’s part of the class “Nama-Stay” – a document that students and Deming compiled describing how they want to feel and how they want to make others feel. It’s signed by each member of the class, and includes words like “important,” “safe,” “accepted,” “secure” and “loved.”
The class discussed ways to feel Zen, a philosophy that embraces meditation as a path to enlightenment. They also practiced starfish breathing, a technique to help them become calm and focused, and wrote about situations where they might use starfish breathing in school and at home.
