Business pathways
Pathways describe sequences of courses in a particular category that a student may wish to focus their studies upon. Please be sure to review prerequisites for all advanced courses.
This CTE pathway prepares students for a career in the field of accounting. Students take courses that culminate with a college course that provides them with entry-level understanding of the concepts of accounting and finance. Students will also take part in a Career Exploration Internship opportunity that will provide them with first- hand knowledge of this business field. Upon completion of this Career and Technical Education pathway, students will earn 3 college credits and a CTE Endorsement on their diplomas.

This CTE pathway prepares students for an entry-level career as a secretary. Students will learning become proficient in typing, Microsoft suite (i.e., PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access), and basic accounting principles, and other web-based applications. Upon completion of this pathway, students have the potential to earn 3 college credits and a Career Technical Education Endorsement on their diplomas.

Career and Financial Management introduces students to the essential concepts of business, the economy and financial literacy. Through engaging, project-based learning, students will explore topics such as workplace success, career exploration and economic principles. The course emphasizes real-world skills, including managing personal finances and understanding the dynamics of the business world. This course provides a strong foundation for success in both personal and professional life.

Accounting I prepares students to keep accurate financial records for a business. The complete accounting cycle is presented, and students learn the basic procedures used to operate a business. Using manual skills, students perform accounting tasks for service businesses organized as proprietorships and for merchandising businesses organized as partnerships. Students will learn how to construct main financial statements and get a foundation on which to continue studying business and accounting at the collegiate level.

Students will broaden and improve their knowledge, understanding and application of accounting principles. Students learn more advanced, complex accounting principles using manual and computer skills. Course includes budgeting, cost concepts and cost allocation, methods of depreciation and information related to operating, investing and financing activities. Students perform accounting tasks for merchandising businesses organized as partnerships and corporations.

This course meets the requirement for Mathematics diploma credit.
Business Math prepares students for the financial realities they will face in both personal and professional life. Topics include practical applications of arithmetic and algebra skills, such as budgeting, managing credit, and understanding interest rates. Students will also learn how to analyze financial statements and apply mathematical concepts to solve everyday problems. The course emphasizes financial literacy to help students avoid common financial pitfalls. Upon completion, students will be equipped with valuable skills for managing their finances.

Advanced Business Math builds on fundamental math skills to and algebra skills through factoring trinomials and applies those skills to topics including ratio and proportion, percentages, simple interest, commercial discounts and purchases and present value. The course also covers business-specific concepts like income statement calculations and analysis will include sales, cost of goods sold, markup and operating expenses. Using practical examples and problem-solving exercises, students will gain the tools needed for financial decision-making in business settings. Students may earn college credits through Hudson Valley Community College. Tuition credit fees apply. Fee waiver or reduction may be available.

The objective of this course is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge necessary in understanding and appreciating the concepts and issues facing the global world of business in the 21st century. Topics in this course will provide students with an awareness of the many facets of a modern business including, but not limited to marketing, finance, management and legal/ethical issues. In addition, the student will gain an appreciation for the importance of attendance, conduct and personal appearance in business settings.

This full year course provides students the opportunity to learn about a wide range of legal topics that can be applied in business, career and personal settings. Topics covered include, but are not limited to, constitutional law, court systems, criminal law, ground for civil lawsuits, contracts, auto/home purchasing process and small business creation. The topics covered are explored in depth through in-class projects, case law analyses, class debates and application of current events. Throughout the course students will be exposed to different careers in the legal field and an opportunity to learn more about them from industry professionals.

Computer Applications prepares students with essential technology skills for academic and professional success. Students will gain proficiency in Microsoft Word, develop typing skills with a goal of 35-45 words per minute, and proper use of the internet. The course emphasizes practical applications, helping students create professional documents. Students will leave with a valuable skill set to enhance their employability and academic performance. Computer experience is not a requirement for this course.

This course introduces students to the sports and entertainment industry. It focuses on the marketing of sports as it applies to professional leagues, teams, events, amateur sports, sporting goods and sports media. It is a project-based computer class that looks at the marketing of non-sport products through sports with an introduction to sponsorship, licensing and athlete endorsements. Students apply marketing concepts and strategies to the sports industry through the development of sports marketing and promotion strategies and plans.

This course is designed to develop skills and knowledge that will be used to help students develop sound money-management skills and inform them of the financial planning process. Topics include budgeting and all that it entails, including sources of income, taxes, benefits and costs of spending; career as it relates to earning potential and what employers are looking for; savings and investments; inflation, risks and returns and relationships between saving and investing; credit, its purpose and the importance of managing and using it wisely; and insurance, how it works, types and costs.

Web Design introduces students to the fundamentals of creating engaging and professional websites. Students will learn about site layout, design principles and incorporating multimedia elements to enhance user experience. Students will discuss, analyze and critique current popular websites. Hands-on projects will include designing websites, providing practical experience using today’s commonly accessible development tools.
